The Indians endured perhaps their most crushing loss of the season Wednesday, and infielder Luis Valbuena was in the middle it, for better and worse. The better came first.
Valbuena’s RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning stretched the Indians’ lead over Toronto to 4-2. But with two outs in the top of the ninth, Valbuena’s error on a routine grounder that should have been the last out of the game allowed a run to score and set up a two-run home run that sent the Indians to a 5-4 loss.
It was a dramatic swing in emotions for Valbuena, who is trying to establish himself as an everyday second baseman at the major league level. Wednesday, however, Valbuena was playing shortstop, replacing the injured Asdrubal Cabrera.
